I've been toying with the idea of a truly carry everywhere camera for a while now. Having started a 365 (photo a day), I've been carrying my camera bag around with me quite a bit but it's not always easy to do or something I want to do.
When Fujifilm first released the diminutive X-70 I wasn't overly blown away with the idea of one to start with. A camera with no viewfinder isn't always a great option and with a fixed 18mm f/2.8 lens it isn't really a focal length I photograph a lot.
However having looked further at the X-70 it became apparent it's the ideal carry anywhere camera. It has a specification that just about matches its bigger X100t sibling, it features a flip screen for shooting from the hip and it's possible via a digital converter to shoot in 35mm or 50mm focal length format if you shoot in jpg format only.
There is also an option to buy a wide conversion lens (WCL-X70) offering a 21mm (14mm) focal length or the tele converter from the X100 fits (WCL-X100) providing a magnified 42mm focal length. Both lens converters do not appear to offer any reduction in image quality.
Having picked up the X-70 a couple of weeks ago, it certainly appears to tick all the boxes for me. The quality of the photographs it creates are almost on a par with its bigger siblings and the flip screen is great for getting those photos without obviously taking them or to pop out and use if need as a kind of tripod type support in low light.
It's simple enough to carry in a pocket and for our and about an external battery pack provides an ideal way to top the battery up when needed, but both are small enough to carry almost anywhere!
It's also perfect to pair with the Fuji Instax SP-2 printer which allows printing of small credit card sized photos via wi-fi.
If you're an existing Fuji camera user set up is familiar and the output of the photos is very similar to other X-series cameras.
Overall first impressions are very good, I have turned off the touch screen as I prefer to have manual control of the camera, but as it works in similar fashion to other Fuji X cameras it's simple enough. I understand the X-70 is a discontinued model now, but if you are in the market for a small everyday carry camera I'd certainly recommend it.
Here's a few initial photographs taken with Fuji's little pocket camera.
