Bargain Lenses

Don't you just love them... With all the modern technology that comes our way nowadays it's all easy to forget that out there lives an unlimited amount of lenses that just a few years ago were regarded as the 'bees knees' at the time, and in today's terms can be picked up for bargain money, offering the photo enthusiast and hobbyist real genuine value for money.  OK, so you may have to do a little homework and some research and be patient in finding what you want - but in the end it's worth it to find these hidden gems.

A little while ago, having bought the Canon 5D Mark 1, in itself a gem I read about the 28-70 f3.5 - 4.5 lens which albeit a very old EF Canon lens still produces great, sharp images.  They are a little thin on the ground now, but if you're prepared to keep looking and are patient you can find them.  eBay has some listed most weeks and they can be found for under a £100.

Having picked one of these up I am pretty impressed with the results so far.  Once stopped down, it performs admirably and is ideal for fun days out.  Of course, having moved away from zoom lenses last year, it takes a little getting used to but within a few minutes that's easily sussed out.

First indications are that it performs admirably, and I'm hoping for an everyday walkabout lens it will suffice.  OK, it's a little noisy wide open but with latest PP software available that's easily taken care of.  It's compact and easily fits into a walkabout bag - and at the end of the day, when I'm in the position to upgrade to a 24-70mm f/2.8 then I reckon I'll still get my money back on it.

But don't just take my word for it.  Here's what the guys at PhotoZone had to say about it when they reviewd it -

The Canon EF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 II is one of the little known secrets…. The resolution figures are highly impressive and the other optical characteristics are at least on a decent level.

I'm on the hunt for a bargain wide angle lens now - I've got a couple in mind, so as and when I find one that lives up to expectation, I'll report back.  In the meantime, if you have any great suggestions why not drop me a note and let me know your choices.
